Dear Readers,
I hope you have been enjoying your summer so far and are finding ways to stay cool in this typical triple-digit Texas heat.
This month, we shine a spotlight on barbecue, brew, and burger joints in Georgetown and beyond. Be sure to take our Trail Guide with you as you explore the many mouth-watering restaurants and breweries around Central Texas.
For a unique summer road trip, head to the Houston Museum of Natural Science this month for the Brewsology Beer Fest, a highlight among other beer festivals in our Worth the Drive feature. In this issue, you’ll also learn all about the different types of beer and their historical and cultural roots.
When it comes to Texas barbecue, you might be surprised to learn that not all Texans smoke their meat the same way. Discover the varieties in our BBQ Styles story, that showcases the diverse barbecue flavors and techniques around the state. Also check out our BBQ Family Tree, which features families like the Muellers, Blacks, and Coopers and their journeys to bringing finger-licking barbecue dishes to Texas plates.
If you want to bring those smoky flavors home, flip through our BBQ Tips for Beginners for hacks and tricks, along with our food page for recipes for side dishes to go with all that barbecue.
When your appetite is satisfied and you’re seeking vocational gratification, consider giving back by teaming up with the Wilco Regional Animal Shelter as a dog or kitten foster. Our Parting Shot also recognizes a newly installed memorial plaque at the Bark Park that honors the lives of 75 dogs that were lost in the September 2021 fire. Thank you to the City of Georgetown for remembering these dogs, and for approving fire code changes to ensure pet safety in the future.
