October has always been my favorite month. It’s football season. The weather is perfect; not too hot or cold. The stores start putting out their holiday decorations―I am one of those people who gets excited about Christmas in August.
Plus, I grew up in Virginia and always loved the change in the colors in nature that seemed to catch fire right around my birthday. Okay, yes, my mom always made a big deal out of my birthday, so maybe that was part of it too. I had a chocolate cake with orange icing and M&M jack-o-lantern face every year until I was 19. She even managed to mail my cake when I was a freshman in college.
To celebrate Fall at the Georgetown View, we went with some traditional themes. You’ll find a lot of pumpkin thoughts and ideas on these pages. We actually thought that might be a little obvious… until we saw Starbucks’ live countdown to the first pumpkin spice latté order on Facebook. Clearly, the obsession hasn’t waned.
We also took a little different tack for a Halloween story. While not haunted, the historical cemeteries in Williamson County have a lot to offer history buffs, family members and folks who just want to provide a cardinal act of kindness every now and then. They inspired me with their willingness to work so hard for things forgotten or abandoned by others.
Never abandoned is Georgetown’s love and respect for our Veterans.
I was pleased to get a head start on Veterans’ Day with Dr. Jeanne Cox,
Director of our Field of Honor. I always appreciate a chance to recognize and thank veterans of all wars, of all ages, apart from the solemnity of Memorial Day.
I hope we have done justice to the event for them and their families.
You may notice even more new features this month. We’re building our knowledge base and interests as quickly as we can; always trying to keep things fresh, share information and, of course, entertain you.
