Editor’s Note • May 2021

May Greetings…

It’s wonderful to be writing this letter, having glanced at my letter from May 2020 and thinking about how far we’ve come since then. Not only are the Spring flowers arriving in gorgeous defiance of the winter storm, our stories—and our City—are once again celebrating rodeos, graduations, moms, and Memorial Day.

I was honored to meet with the folks featured in our cover story. The Devil Dog Squadron commit their time and energy every day to honoring our military history and traditions. I was also pleased to be accompanied by one of our new writers, Karina Cuenca, who is eager to contribute great content, and get to know the great people of Georgetown.

This month we celebrate moms and all those special women who mother us in wonderful ways. You’ll meet a wonderful cross-section of those in our special feature dedicated to Mother’s Day.

Our Thriving After 55 section takes a personal, and scientific look at brain health and memory care and our entire staff is looking forward to learning more about the research and findings of the Mike Douglas and the Georgetown Brain Study, now in its first phase.

Many thanks also to Texas Representative Terry Wilson, who helped us shine a light on Article III appropriations, which support public schools, colleges, and universities.

Speaking of education, let’s send some love to our GISD seniors, who have weathered disappointments and constant change over the past year. I hope their school parades at the Downtown Square, May 22nd, will be unique moments to share in 2053 when they are asked, “Mom, what was it like to graduate during a pandemic?” Congratulations to all!

Here’s to your continued good health, Georgetown.
